Isn't that a delightful header? It comes from the days when TV Guide celebrated Christmas not only with a headline spread across two pages, but by labeling the day as such, rather than simply saying, in this case, "Sunday." That last part is a trait that they continued even after they stopped doing the header, by the way. By the end of TV Guide's days—at least the TV Guide that we all knew and loved—they'd ceased to recognize Christmas in any meaningful sense. It reminds me of one of our hometown newspapers, I can't remember which one—there's one on each side of the river. In any event, on Christmas morning, above the masthead, the person in charge of the layout had splashed, in big letters, "Happy Holidays!" It was the source of much ridicule in the days to come; one liberal commentator observed that, no matter how you felt about it, December 25 was undeniably Christmas Day, and the paper could hardly have gotten in trouble by stating a declarative fact. This is, however, the city that once banned red poinsettias in government buildings; you could have white ones, or pink I suppose, but red was "too" Christmasy. Might offend someone, you know. Me, I'll quote one of my favorite writers, that "Offend" should be my middle name.
Today's listings come from New York City, with a touch of Connecticut thrown in. And, as promised, there's plenty of Christmas commentary thrown in.
Christmas, U.S.A. is CBS's presentation of Christmas celebrations from around the country, including Valley Forge, New York City, San Diego, and Salt Lake City. Ed Sullivan is definitely in the Yuletide spirit tonight, with appearances from the Baird Puppets, musical comedy star Alfred Drake, opera singer Roberta Peters, and the Robert Shaw Chorale. This show would have been a winner no matter what episode of Hollywood Palace would have been up against. it.
WCBS ends the evening with a pair of Christmas movies: Remember the Night, with Fred MacMurray as a sympathetic D.A. looking after shoplifter Barbara Stanwyck; and Larceny, Inc., a delightful comedy with Edward G. Robinson as the leader of a gang that buys a luggage store to use as a front for robbing the next-door bank, only to see the store become profitable.
At noon, CBS Television Workshop ends its run with a Christmas-themed story of passengers on an American plane headed for Moscow that develops engine trouble. Later in the afternoon, Leonard Bernstein hosts Christmas Startime, first shown last year, with the New York Philharmonic, the St. Paul's Cathedral Boys Choir of London, and the great Marian Anderson.
G.E. Theater's "The Other Wise Man," based on the story by Henry Van Dyke and hosted by Ronald Reagan and his family, tells of another Wise Man, Artaban (Harry Townes), who, failing to visit the Christ Child in the manger, spends the rest of his life searching for Him. You can see it here. Later, on Candid Camera, servicemen stationed in Greenland are surprised by a visit from their wives and sweethearts. I guess that isn't such a new thing today at that.
On Eternal Light, Maurise Samuel and Mark Van Doren discuss "Mr. Lincoln and the Bible." The matinee movie at 2:00 p.m. is The Bells of St. Mary's, the sequel to Going My Way, with Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman in a story against a Christmas backdrop; Bing gets his second Oscar nomination for playing Fr. Chuck O'Malley. That's followed at 4:00 p.m. by NBC's eleventh presentation of the stirring Amahl and the Night Visitors, with Kirk Jordan and Rosemary Khulmann. And at 7:00 p.m., Shirley Temple presents Victor Herbert's Babes in Toyland, with Jonathan Winters, Jerry Colonna, Joe Besser and Carl Ballantine as the bad guys.
If that Thomas Mitchell version of Miracle on 34th Street doesn't cut it for you, you have one more chance to see the original at 2:00 p.m. Before that, though, the whimsical Damon Runyon Theater has "Dancing Dan's Christmas," in which Broderick Crawford plays a mobster Directions '61 has "The Rag Tent," based on the play "Christmas in the Marketplace," which tells the story of a group of migrant workers spending Christmas Eve in a field tent near a motel.
At 6:30 p.m., Walt Disney presents "From All of Us to All of You," his much-loved Christmas show first shown in 1958, featuring Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and more of Walt's most popular animated characters. And at 10:30 p.m., it's Music for a Christmas Night—The Gift of Song, a pleasant half-hour of Yuletide favorites.
No question about it, you're going to get plenty of opportunities to see the University of Connecticut and Southern Connecticut State glee clubs today, plus the Yale Glee Club. I wonder if they're allowed to do concerts like this anymore? At 3:00 p.m., Paul Winchell's weekly series returns; he plays Santa Claus, and Jerry Mahoney is Santa's helper. With help like that. . .
I like the way WNHC ends the evening: with the classic Christmas in Connecticut, starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, Sydney Greenstreet and Reginald Gardiner. How appropriate that it's being shown on Christmas, in Connecticut.
And there you have it. Not a bad way to spend Christmas, is it? TV

One thing for sure: if WOR paid one million dollars for Blackbeard, the Pirate, they were going to be damned sure they got their money's worth out of it. I'd opt for Laurel and Hardy's March of the Wooden Soldiers, a very loose adaptation of the Babes in Toyland story we saw on Shirley Temple's show. Don't watch it for the story, though, but for Stan and Ollie, especially when Stan tries to teach Ollie how to play pee-wees. Surprisingly, the best version you're going to see is the colorized one, which is really well done.
