One of the reasons I enjoy looking at Saturday listings, aside from the fond memories it produces, is that it gives us a little more variety than weekdays. The afternoon programs are rarely the same from week to week, and local movies abound. Will the same hold true this week? Let's find out!
Note that KTCA, the educational channel, doesn't broadcast on weekends - after all, school's out of session.
As I've mentioned before, Critics Award was the prestige movie show on Minneapolis television, as I recall. It was sponsored by the Iron Mining Industry of Minnesota, and presented uninterrupted, save for an informational film on the taconite industry shown at the beginning by host Earl Henson. That would run a few minutes, but it was worth it. Of course, some of those commercials might have wound up on some kind of DVD collection today, while some of the movies shown on Critics Award are now forgotten, so I guess everything's relative.
What I find interesting here is that KSTP, as well as WCCO, has their first-string news team on the Saturday news. Later in the '60s, The Huntley-Brinkley Report introduces a Saturday edition as well. Remember, back then Saturday was a kind of extension of the rest of the week, and it wasn't uncommon for people in some professions to work a half-day. I'm glad that's changed.
That FDR series on at 6:00 p.m. is a weekly series which ABC aired in the 1964-65 season; it was shown on a different night of the week on the network, but KMSP preempted it for local programming, which probably brought in higher ratings and, therefore, more revenue. Like ABC's earlier Winston Churchill series, the star power was in the narration; Richard Burton on Churchill, and Arthur Kennedy and Charlton Heston here.
This week offered some quality movies on the local stations; "Picnic" on Channel 4, "The Horse Soldiers" on Channel 9, and on Channel 11 it's Sophia Loren's Oscar-winning performance in "Two Women." Of course, we've also got "The Giant Gila Monster" and "Teenage Caveman", but where would Mystery Science Theater 3000 be without them?
